Moving Lives
Stories of Barnsley Families.
Barnsley Family History Society
Paperback £5.99
Commissioned and compiled by Barnsley Family History (to mark its 21st anniversary) and authored by some of its members, this book consists of fifteen articles about local people and families.
There are features about the Savage family in Barnsley over a long time period (1816-1930); Harriet Ann Dale; the Thorps of Gawber Hall; Joblings in Darfield; Hulse family name; Loukes of Cawthorne and Hoylandswaine; Tommy Duggan; Joseph Walker; Jaggers of Thurgoland Wire Mill; Louisa Taylor/Harvey; Bashforths of Dodworth; emigration to America; Chisworths to Thurgoland; Armins; and an intriguing piece on Swaledale, Barnsley and the MId West. So the theme - as the title proclaims - is certainly one of movement, reinforcing the fact that many of our ancestors sought new lives and jobs in a variety of locations, some much more distant than others. There are useful illustrations, footnotes and a good index.
All in all a very useful volume to have for anyone from Barnsley interested in local and family history; and a good piece of editing
by Ron Spensley. |
