David Price, Philimore/The History Press
Sheffield Troublemakers. Rebels and Radicals in Sheffield History
Hardback £16.99
This is an excellent book, well researched and well written, covering a fairly neglected but important subject.
The author writes about the ‘radical tradition’ that developed in Sheffield from the early nineteenth century to modern times. Notable chapters include features on Parliamentary Reform, Sheffield Socialism, the Chartists, Women’s Struggle, religious campaigners, the early Labour Party and Blunkett and the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire. There are almost a hundred illustrations, making it a very attractive publication. Northern towns such as Sheffield and Barnsley have had of course a long history of dissent but popular books about this are few. This new publication is highly recommended for anyone interested in Sheffield and South Yorkshire social and political history. |
