Fascinating Brews
IN the current economic climate, many more people are starting to enjoy a drink in the comfort of their own home.
Rather than go out to the pub, they shop locally for beers and wines to enjoy with friends at home. Increasingly popular are beers from the UK’s many micro-breweries including home grown names from Yorkshire breweries along with brewers from Scotland.
Many such beers are only available in specialist outlets and not from the supermarket. One of these outlets is Taste Fine Wines of Almondbury which has an ever-growing selection of beers from micro-breweries including two close at hand.
Take a look at the range at Taste and you’ll see brews from Golcar Brewery which produces a range of ales from its base in the Colne Valley, and Empire Brewing which brews at the delightfully named Old Boiler House in Slaithwaite and lists Valour among its ales.

Also on the shelves at Taste is a selection from the Samuel Smith brewery of Tadcaster, the oldest brewery in Yorkshire, and Copper Dragon which is based in Skipton and produces an extensive range of ales.
Along with the Yorkshire breweries, Taste has recently introduced a range of bottled beers from a number of Scottish micro-breweries, not readily seen in otherretail outlets.
Manufacturers such as Arran Brewery, Black Isle Brewery, Broughton Ales, Cairngorm Brewery, Heather Ale Ltd and the Highland Brewing Company on Orkney are all producing popular ales with wonderful and unusual names.
Take a look at the shelves and you’ll see Arran Blonde and Arran Dark ales from the Arran Brewery which was originally set up in 2000 by two visitors to the area. Two organic beers Red Kite Ale and Yellowhammer are from the Black Isle Brewery which is located in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, just north of Inverness.
Ales from Broughton have a reputation for beers with character and draw on local history and legend, while the Cairngorm Brewery, based in the ski centre of Aviemore, is an award-winning centre.
Heather Ales, based in Alloa, use ingredients including heather, Scottish pine needles and elderberries. One of the most popular is Fraoch Heather Ale, now on sale at Taste.
One of the youngest breweries is the Highland Brewing Company in Orkney, which was established in 2007 and already has a range of ales to its name.
Discover these fascinating brews for yourself and raise a toast to micro-breweries!
