Summer Gardening

Summer is once again upon us and hopefully all the hard work that we have put into our garden over the spring is starting to pay off. But for anyone who is still a bit behind on their garden maintenance don’t worry it is not too late.

You may have missed the opportunity to prune summer flowering shrubs but everything in the garden would appreciate a good feed and mulch. This would give the plants a real boost and help to conserve the moisture for the summer months because after all summer is the time when you want to be relaxing in the garden not working in it.

Grasses - Go Big & Bold

They make a striking picture standing tall with beautiful fronds and elegant seed heads. Hardy and resilient they weather heat and strong winds alike and require well drained soil. The sound of wind rustling through grass is like the rush of the sea. Good for backdrop and dimension around water features. The variety of height, colour and contrast create a unique backdrop (see photograph).

A couple of varieties if you have the space to go big and bold are:
Arundo has a spectacular variegated leaf and grows up to 1.5m high.
Cortaderia Selloana Sunningdale Silver grows to 3m in height with long flowing creamy white flowers up to 75cm long.

Hints & Tips

A handy hint if you want to keep one corner of the garden tidier and easy to manage is to incorporate raised beds. Utilise for a vegetable patch or herb garden.
