A Bold New Ford
Ford gave us the new Mondeo and Focus and now we have the Kuga, all in different market sectors, but all with the bold frontal look.
The Kuga is Ford's first move into the lighter four-wheel-drive sector, my first experience of their off-roaders was the rather bulky Explorer which sold well in America but not in the UK.
Most 4x4s look butch, but this newcomer should be more acceptable to potential buyers because it is compact. Designed by Sheffield-educated Martin Smith, Ford's director of design, it has adopted the new face of Ford, with bold upper and lower grilles and swept-back headlamps.
The bonnet looks muscular with distinctive power blisters. From the side it has an athletic look, the rising belt line and kick-up at the rear window makes it look as though its moving when it is not.
There is a two-part tailgate and a rubber pad in the number plate recess operates which section you want open. This is a handy arrangement, and means there is no huge door reaching the sky when small items are being loaded.

The Kuga comes with a two-litre turbo diesel engine that is matched to a six-speed gearbox. It is simple to drive because power goes through the front wheels but if they start to lose adhesion, the power is transferred to the rear.
Trim levels available are the Zetec and Titanium. Ford claim best in class for emission levels and they claim around 40mpg for consumption.
The Kuga is a find newcomer into the crossover market and will be appreciated by women drivers who love the high driving position and feeling of safety from the high stance of the vehicle.
Prices £20,000 to £22,500.
