It takes just 25 seconds to transform the Eos from coupe to open top at the touch of a single button, so it really is a car that can be enjoyed all year round.
Because the Eos sits between the Golf and the Passat, it is larger than the opposition and it is also more attractive.
There is plenty of space inside for adults and even with the roof stored there is still decent luggage space.
It looks fantastic with the top down and still handsome with the roof in place. It does not suffer from a fat unwieldy rump like some of its rivals.
Four engines are available right away, a 1.6-litre petrol, two two-litre petrols and a two-litre diesel.
Only the larger of the two-litre petrols was fitted to all the launch cars but that was no hardship since it is the excellent power plant from the acclaimed Golf GTi.
It is a cracking engine which delivers its power smoothly right through the range and reaches 62mph in just 7.8 seconds and can go on to a top speed of 144mph. It is also surprisingly economical with a combined fuel economy of 33.6mpg and it is priced at £23,315.
It is really well equipped and standard kit on all versions includes all the regular electronic stability aids, air conditioning and parking sensors. Sport models feature uprated suspensions, larger alloys and smarter trim.
The roomy cabin is very comfortable and similar to the Golf hatch in layout and build quality, although it does have unique air vents and door trims.
The ride and handling are excellent with the roof up or down and this really cuts a dash and draws admiring glances.
The six-speed box is a joy to use with this engine and the Eos always feels taut and composed on any surface. With the roof down cabin bluster is minimal and it is a fine place to be on a summer's day.
This car is built to VW's normally high standards and it is now the best in this segment by a considerably margin and worth the extra money. We will only have a short time to wait to see if the Focus CC can knock it off its perch.
