Dining Out at Wortley Hall
Set in 26 acres of formal woodland, Wortley Hall is a beautiful stately home which, for the past 50 years, has been operated by the Labour Movement as an educational and recreational centre. It was originally built in the 18th Century by the Wharncliffe family who lived in it until the Second World War.
Wortley Hall also draws in numerous attractions. On the evening we went for a meal there was a wonderful array of Austin 7s - what used to be called Baby Austins - lined up for a rally.
As befits any former stately home there are rooms and corridors galore, with ornate plasterwork and grand lofty ceilings. The restaurant and bar evoke a genteel quality which accords with the peace found in the gardens.
Our menus efficiently delivered, we studied the starters and found them to be pleasingly diverse. There was Pressed Confit Ham Terrine, Smoked Salmon Mascarpone Risotto, and Avocado with Honey, but my companion, Susan, chose the Soup of the Day which turned out to be a thick and tasty Butternut Squash. The Home Smoked Chicken Breast caught my eye, which, served with a celery and apple combination, made a suitable mouth-watering contrast.
