The Grill at Brooklands

by Sam McQueen

Plush red and black furnishings greeted us on entering The Grill at Brooklands Hotel.

It had not been a pleasant drive up the motorway owing to casual fog, but with a steadying drink in our hands and the warmth of our surroundings, we soon began to relax and peruse the proffered menu.

Brooklands has gone through a number of phases since its days as a truck stop. It has grown into a luxury 4 star hotel, (awarded 2005 Yorkshire Tourist Board 'Best Hotel of the Year') with The Grill as its restaurant, pride of place on the menu still going to its famous 'Barnsley Chop.' Before the main course, though, we had to choose from a variety of starters. My wife went for the soup of the day, which was chicken, while I felt that the haddock and chive fishcake would be pleasantly light.

We were swiftly taken to our cosy corner table. The chicken soup was hot and delicious, just the thing for Maria, who had ventured out despite a dreadful head cold. As expected, the fishcake was beautifully baked, a soft inside enveloped by a crispy breadcrumb coating, the whole ably enhanced by a salsa dressing.
