Staindrop Lodge
By Jack Spratt
It was the best evening of the year to date as far as weather was concerned. A glorious early May day had been followed by one of those warm calm evenings when thoughts turn to village-green cricket, drinks on the terrace and a lazy Friday night meal.
A long Winter and a late Spring almost forgotten, we were pleased to be returning to Staindrop Lodge after many years absence. Historic Staindrop; the home of the Newtons of the famous Newton-Chambers industrial complex in Chapeltown was built by George Newton in 1806. Substantially rebuilt in 1904
it was later used by Newton-Chambers as part of the company’s head office premises before being converted into a well known restaurant, small hotel and functions venue. After being closed for more than two years for major development, the Staindrop opened it doors again in September 2002.
