The Crossroads Inn
High above New Mill on Penistone Road sits The Crossroads Inn, a perennial favourite with both drinkers and diners of all ages.
Now, following a recent refurbishment and newly extended menu, this popular country pub has even more to offer with outdoor seating for fine weather and a great children’s adventure play area.
The Crossroads Inn is a favourite for all ages - from young families, to couples to the retired. It offers choices for everyone - whether you want a quiet table tucked in a corner or a large table for a family meal to celebrate a special occasion.
It’s been a while since I had visited The Crossroads Inn and was keen to see what it had to offer on the menu. Always a popular spot with diners, this evening was no exception and the large dining area was already busy at 7pm.
You’re always assured of a warm welcome from hosts Colin and Margaret, who seem to manage to extend a friendly greeting to all.

Once seated, we had a quick glance at the wine menu and decided on a Hardy’s Merlot and were surprised to see how competitive the wine prices were. Some restaurants don’t know what to charge for wine - and it’s nice that Crossroads is being sensible about wine prices and making it affordable for all.
A quick slurp and we both agreed it was a particularly nice Merlot as well.
So to the menu and we were surprised to see a great blackboard selection accompanying the main menu with both starters and main courses well represented.
Looking at the main menu however we decided on a Prawn Cocktail served with granary bread and Home Made Salmon and Broccoli Fish Cake served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. Both arrived and were soon polished off as we were ready for our meal.
Onto main courses and I’m afraid I was very unadventurous, opting for Roast of the Day, available with beef, pork or turkey or a mix of two meats. You know what it’s like when something just takes your fancy and on a late summer chilly evening a plate of roast turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes and a host of vegetables just touched the spot.
My friend was a little more undecided but eventually opted for a fish dish from the specials board - Cod topped with a Parmesan Crust and served with an avocado salad.
Both plates provided delicious food, although I have to admit my eyes were bigger than my belly and I had to leave some potatoes and vegetables.
The rest of the menu offers both traditional favourites and more contemporary choices from around the world including Mexican Fajitas, Chicken New Yorker and Chinese Chicken and Prawn Stirfry. There are also good vegetarian and fish choices.
Moving onto the dessert menu, there is again a good balance of old favourites and new choices including crumbles, sponges, ice cream etc.
On this occasion my friend opted for a very large dish full of treacle sponge and custard which somehow seemed to disappear very quickly and I chose cheesecake, after my first choice of tiramasu had sold out.
A great choice of special liquer coffees is also available along with regular coffees to finish the meal.
So almost 10 out of 10 for a great meal the only drawback being I could have just fancied the tiramasu but not to worry, cheesecake was nice for a change. Good wine and good food, all served at affordable competitive prices make The Crossroads Inn a great choice for a meal out.
The Crossroads Inn is particularly popular on Sundays when a great Sunday lunch is always on offer, serving traditional roasts and a great choice of hot puddings including apple pie and custard, jam roly poly etc. Great for Autumn and Winter Sundays when the cold wind whips across the Pennines and you need some hot food inside you.
Going to The Crossroads Inn at any time of year is always a nice treat but somehow it’s the sort of pub that’s just great on a winter’s evening when the sky is dark, the wind cool and the welcoming lights of this local pub beckon.
Young families however would argue it’s just as good on a fine summer’s evening when mum and dad can sit out and enjoy a drink while the youngsters have a great time in the play area.
I guess that sums it all up really this eating pub is a great asset to the local area as a good all-rounder whatever time of year it is and whatever kind of food you prefer. Give it a try and you’ll be back for more!
The Crossroads Inn has disabled facilites and a heated outdoor smoking area.
