A Unique Taste & Style
The first thing that struck us as we walked into The Foresters at Lower Cumberworth was how busy it was for early doors on a cold midweek evening.
Word has obviously spread about the change of ownership at this popular local pub, the biggest change being the creation of Riley’s restaurant featuring the unique cooking style of chef/owner James Riley.
To say the menu is ‘unique’ is certainly true. Anyone unfamiliar with Riley’s may find some of the food combinations slightly surprising such as Roast Fillet of Beef served with its own mini steamed Steak and Kidney Pudding. However it works - and best of all, tastes fabulous!
Once seated in the bar area, we enjoyed a glass of wine (a very pleasant House Red Merlot) and studied the menu which changes about every six weeks.
Three of us were dining at The Foresters and we all opted for different starters and main courses. I chose the Goats Cheese and Caramelised Onion Tart to start with while my partners-in-crime went for the Tian of Crab and Smoked Salmon and the Pan Seared Scallops with Pesto Mash.
After being shown to our table in the newly revamped and stylish upper level restaurant area, we didn’t have long to wait until all three starters arrived, resplendent on white crockery and looking as good as we hoped they would taste. Don’t you agree? There’s something about a restaurant with crisp white linen tablecloths and napkins it just adds that that little extra!

All three plates were soon cleared and we looked forward to our main courses again three different choices and all with the previously mentioned unique combinations. I ordered Fillet of Salmon with Bubble and Squeak while the other two opted for Cannon of Wortley Lamb (with a mini Shepherd’s Pie) and Fillet of Beef (with Steak and Kidney Pudding). Great dishes which tasted fabulous and combined foods you wouldn’t usually put together.
Room for a pudding? Well, one to share! Again unusual choices but we decided on Lemon Cheesecake with a Mini Doughnut and Lemon Curd ice-cream. Mmm!! Rounding off the evening with a coffee, we were also given three of the famous Riley’s homemade chocolates. Chocoholics take note!
James Riley and his partner Nicola are making a great success of their new venture. They also run the Rose & Crown at Hoylandswaine but have moved Riley’s Restaurant to The Foresters. The bar menu Simply Riley’s is still served at Hoylandswaine and also now at Lower Cumberworth.
Make a note that Riley’s at The Foresters also offers a great Sunday lunch but booking is advisable. James and Nicola are off to a great start at The Foresters best of luck to them and their team!!
Everyone is very welcome to simply enjoy a drink at The Foresters and sit and enjoy the atmosphere in front of the cosy real fire. Choose from traditional real ales along with a good selection of wines, beers and lagers. A small function/private dining room is also available.
