Dining Out Restaurant Review... Rotherham
Aston Hall

By Brian Elliott

Aston Hall is one of the best small country houses in South Yorkshire. This former home of the Holderness family represents the work of our greatest northern architect: John Carr of York.

Famous people have stayed here. The Byrons, father and son, who were both rumoured to have run off with the lady of the manor, were guests on separate occasions. Lord Byron junior, the famous poet, took his lover to his home at Newstead Abbey but she was soon returned to Aston.

So, if you want a historic and interesting venue to dine this one takes some beating. The grounds alone are superb, perfect for that special event.

I arrived with my wife at about 7pm on a dismal early summer’s evening, a little uncertain as what to expect as I had visited the Hall several years earlier. First impressions are important. The interior has been transformed, newly decorated and furbished in a smart contemporary style, which really does complement the historic setting. I soon discovered that the owners were Tomahawk, well known for their interests in high quality and stylish design. There was a warm welcome in the cocktail/bar area from manager Craig and during drinks we perused the attractive menu in the capable hands of Alistair who looked after us in the restaurant.
