Dining Out...
Carlton Park Hotel
with Sam McQueen
Through the large windows on the right-hand side of the Carlton Park Hotel devices equivalent to instruments of torture for the computer age are clearly visible. Some would say that this is what they are, in effect, because this is the exercise area of the Ultimate Spa Experience. It is the newest addition to the hotel's amenities and includes steam and sauna suites, a multigym, a swimming pool and a jacuzzi. It is fully air-conditioned but the warmth around the pool we were shown by General Manager Kevin Saville invites you to shed your clothes and slide into the calm warm waters.
He is justifiably proud of the hotel's latest venture, whose design and fee structure makes it as accessible as possible to local people.
Kevin was in the middle of overseeing yet another Prom Night at the Carlton Park when Maria and I arrived. It was very much dinner jackets, taffeta and satin long dresses as we walked through the doors.
The Regency Suite had a hushed interior. From the maitre d's desk we were ushered through into the Conservatory part of the restaurant, only constructed a few years ago, to a reserved table for two with an outlook on to a well-laid garden complete with gazebo and complemented by a few occasional tables. The Regency (formerly Pavilion) Suite and Conservatory can combine into a 170-seater restaurant, but there is still good space between tables, which left us feeling we could enjoy some intimate conversation while dining.
