Dining Out at the Charnwood Hotel
It is a number of years since I have been to the Charnwood. Back then it was a pub/restaurant, chicken in a basket was de rigeur and the present Mrs. McQueen was just a figment of my imagination.
We had a pleasant drive from the west along the winding A634 to the?hotel which is just by a narrow bridge. It has had at least three owners since my visit, but is now in the hands of the Williams family. They have turned it into a fashionable hotel, and in January last year added an extension which contains a brand new bespoke restaurant.
We arrived to find more than adequate parking spaces and walked to the front doors past a large lawn which, we were told later, is an ideal place for photographs of the wedding parties who have their receptions here. The entrance to the restaurant is straight into the bar area which is well-stocked and nicely appointed. Like a good meal starter, first impressions are important, and it whet the appetite for the dining room, which could be glimpsed through connecting doors.
We were greeted most amiably by the maitre d', the convivial Ricardo Victor, who made it known we were expected and looked after us with just the right mixture of friendliness and courtesy all evening. Maria and I had a small bet as to his nationality - she thought he was Italian and I guessed at Spanish.
