Experience Bollywood
Opened just over 12 months ago, Wakefield’s Bollywood Lounge is stylish, dramatic and contemporary!
Offering an extensive menu, this welcome addition to the local restaurant scene has been well received in the city and on the evening we visited, was packed to the rafters with people enjoying a taste of India.
Although slightly understated from the exterior, the real flavour of Bollywood hits you as soon as you walk through the door. Oozing glamour and style, the restaurant is set over two levels with a sweeping staircase leading to an upstairs balcony dining area with a panoramic view of this busy restaurant.
A smart bar and waiting area is also situated upstairs where diners enjoy a drink while waiting for their table. Bollywood Lounge, complete with a big screen showing popular Bollywood films, has been designed by General Manager Marcus Harby in a glamorous contemporary decor with stylish glasses, cutlery and simple white crockery to bring Indian dining in Wakefield right into the Noughties.

After being shown to our seats on the balcony area, we gazed around, surprised how busy it was for an early Friday evening. Ordering a big glass of chilled white wine, we enjoyed some traditional popadums and a pickle tray while we studied the menu.
The menu is extensive and includes some real surprises including a section dedicated to dishes for the health conscious/dieters using the Dr Atkins dietary programme.
There’s also a wide range of starters including traditional Indian dishes, chargrilled starters and fusion dishes. As we munched our popadums we decided to move on to the main courses and were spoilt for choice with award-winning dishes, signature Bhuna flavours, mild and fruity dishes, classics, Tandoori sizzling plates and the chef’s own preparations.
Our waiter was extremely helpful and explained the ingredients and preparation of many dishes until we eventually decided on a final choice.
We decided to share two dishes, the first being a Sharaabi, diced chicken cooked with mixed tropical fruits?, cream, coconut, almond and pistachio simmered with Tia Maria. Our second choice was totally different and came from the Tandoori sizzling dishes selection. Named the Tandoori Cocktail this was a variety of meats, poultry, king prawn, mince and fish combined together to produce a distinctive flavour.
To accompany our choices, we decided on pilau rice and two naan breads, one garlic and one peshwari. We were amazed at how quickly our dishes arrived at the table, personally delivered by one of the young Bollywood chefs, and we tucked in with gusto.
The Sharaabi dish in particular was certainly different with its tropical fruit influence but combined well with the pilau rice and naan bread. As we were very hungry, both dishes soon disappeared and we sat back full and satisfied, having enjoyed a great meal.
Bollywood does offer a selection of desserts but we just opted for coffees, a cappuccino (which I must say was one of the best cappuccino’s I have had in a long time) and a Tia Maria liqueur coffee.
In summary: a great evening combining the Bollywood experience with a bustling atmosphere and innovative food. What more could anyone want?
