The Fox & Hounds
We arrived at the Fox and Hounds on an early Monday evening in November. Like many pubs and restaurants on a Monday evening we expected the venue to be quiet.
We were to be pleasantly surprised. Its ample car park was three quarters full, a good sign. The pub was well lit from the outside and looked inviting.
We were made very welcome by Bev who showed us to our table and made us feel at home.
We ordered our drinks with Bev from a good wine selection, almost all available by the glass or by the bottle. I settled for a Shiraz whilst my partner (Andrea) after volunteering to drive had coke.
We then descended upon the menus and the main thing that struck us both was the variety of food available. A really good assortment of starters and far too many main dishes to list. Everyone’s taste was catered for.

For my starter I chose the soup of the day, which was a rich Oxtail soup served with a hot roll whilst Andrea, had the Beer battered mozza melts served with a chilli dip. Both starters went down a treat
For the main I was recommended to the Rock Grill menu a unique experience that owners Geoff and Norma came across while on holiday in Madeira. This way of cooking allows you to cook your own steak of choice on a very high temperature (449’C ) Volcanic rock which apparently sears in all the natural juices, flavours and nutrient from the meat. And it did! It was one of the nicest steaks I’ve had in a long time. It really was delicious.
Andrea on the other hand decided to throw caution to the wind and went for wholetail Scampi. Not the most adventurous I agree considering the vast choice of main meals on offer but she said it was delicious all the same. Both the steak and the scampi were served with proper home cooked chips and fresh salad and the timing and service was perfect.
We were full, really full, had we got room for dessert?
“I think I’ll have a chocolate nut Sunday” Andrea exclaimed with a wary smile “that means you have to have one”. So that was that we had room for a dessert. I opted for the Brandy snap basket, which was filled with fruits of the forest ice cream and topped with strawberry sauce. Both desserts were really well presented and very soon we were left with empty plates.
The Fox and Hounds is situated in Thorpe Audlin on Doncaster Road and is an independent pub serving good honest English cooking something that is becoming hard to find.
The menu has a huge selection to cater for everyone’s tastes including a good vegetarian selection but isn’t pretentious or over ambitious.
Prices are in line with what you would expect to pay for good pub grub, Starters are priced around £3 whilst my 12oz steak was £11 and my brandy snap basket was £3.95. In all a good atmosphere, great food and a good selection of wine and beers the Fox and Hounds is a good honest pub I would recommend, just make sure your hungry.
