Dining out
The Rising Sun
A meal out at The Rising Sun, Whitwood near Castleford is always enjoyable, with a great menu and pleasant surroundings.
This Grade II listed building, just off the M62, has much to commend it with the more recent addition of the elegant Palm Court function suite which doubles as an extra restaurant for the ever-popular Sunday lunch. Palm Court also offers facilities for Civil Wedding Ceremonies, Wedding Receptions, Anniversaries, Engagements, Birthdays, Meetings and all other occasions.
The pub itself was designed by Charles Voysey in the early 1900s and has been a popular part of Castleford life ever since. In 2006 it received a pub of the year accolade from the Wakefield Express and more recently welcomed to dinner, celebrity chef Brian Turner.

Serving freshly cooked traditional and contemporary dishes, it also offers daily blackboard specials and a popular Sunday carvery. All day dining is available Monday to Saturday 12noon to 10pm and Sunday until 9pm. Both large and small parties are catered for.
Indeed on the night we visited, a large family party was celebrating a 30th birthday in the restaurant and testing the kitchen to the limit with a very varied choice of dishes. However the chef and his team rose to the occasion and all meals were delivered promptly and swiftly polished off.
Meanwhile at our table in the restaurant, we were spoilt for choice when we saw the extensive menu. It had been a while since we visited The Rising Sun and we'd forgotten just what a great choice there is.
A great choice of starters, desserts, lunchtime sandwiches and snacks backs up the vast selection of main courses which include chicken dishes, traditional pies, fish choices, grills and healthy eating options.
Vegetarians are extremely well catered for and those who fancy going Italian can try a dish from the pasta corner.
I decided to go veggie and try the Thai Green Vegetable Curry served with Turmeric rice and naan bread for main course, while my friend chose an old favourite, Beef Stroganoff served with steamed rice or chips. To get our meal underway however we opted for starters of The Rising Sun's famous marinated Chicken Salad and Deep Fried Brie.
Both starters arrived very quickly and were delicious, to be swiftly followed by extremely appetising main courses which we tucked into with gusto, although we had to leave a little as our tummies were very full.
To finish off we opted to share a very yummy Chocolate Nut Crunch Sundae. Yet again The Rising Sun rose to the occasion and delivered a great meal and we'll certainly be back for more.
And finally to make this christmas and new year special book now for christmas lunch, dinner or party night with dinner and entertainment throughout december.
